‘I enjoy BTEC Applied Science because it shows me a side of Science that I have never seen before. Not only am I learning new scientific concepts, but I am also learning how these concepts are used in today’s society.’

‘Science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated.’

 FAQs

  • If you don’t get the grades to do A Level, but have an interest in science or want to pursue a career in science then the BTEC Applied Science course is for you.

It also includes coursework, unlike A Level sciences. So instead of doing exams at the end of 2 years, you can work steadily towards your grade over the 2 years.

Over 95% of Universities recognise the qualification. It opens up the door to an extensive range of science based degrees and careers.

  • The BTEC Applied Science course covers all 3 subject areas Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Year 1 content includes key theory in Biology (cells and tissues), Chemistry (quantitative chemistry and periodicity) and Physics (waves and communication). In addition, you complete two practical based Units; Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques (titration, colorimetry, calorimetry and chromatography) and Science Investigation Skills (diffusion, enzymes, plant growth, electronics and fuels). The additional year 1 units are; Physiology of Human Body Systems, Genetics and Genetic Engineering, Electrical Circuits and their Applications (extended Diploma only), and Astronomy and Space Science (extended Diploma only)

In year 2 you study more advanced topics in Biology (circulatory, respiratory and urinary systems), Chemistry (industrial chemistry, organic chemistry and enthalpy) and Physics (thermodynamics, mechanical properties and fluid properties). In addition, you again complete two practical based Units; Laboratory Techniques (synthesis of ethyl ethanoate and aspirin) and an Investigative Project of the student’s own devising. The other year 2 units are Contemporary Issues, Biomedical Science and Forensic Science.

  • Most students go to University to study a wide variety of courses such as Biomedical science, Pharmacy, Nursing, Forensics and Marine Biology. You can also change direction and do courses like Business. Some students have gone into an Apprenticeship or straight into employment as a Lab Technician.

  • The Diploma option is equivalent to 2 A levels, so you can choose a 3rd A Level subject to study alongside the BTEC Applied Science Diploma.

The Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3 A levels and you will not be able to take up another subject.
