‘Art BTEC encourages me to critically think about my own work and the work of others. It has helped me develop new skills and techniques as well as build confidence as a young artist. I have learnt to produce creative work which reflects on my own ideas and interests.’

‘Creativity is critical thinking and without it how are you going to open up and ask harder questions? Art opens up those… possibilities to think beyond what we already know.’

 FAQs

  • All teachers at Walton High teach the BTEC units. We currently have 6 teachers across both campuses. This is great as we all have different skills and backgrounds. It means you can access specialist tuition in painting, ceramics, printmaking, textiles, installation and surface pattern design.

  • Each option block has 5 hours timetabled lessons per week. We expect you to mirror this with independent study. This can be done in school during study and independent learning sessions.

  • Generally, vocational courses are combined with other vocational courses. The most popular combination with Art that we have seen in recent years, is Creative Media. There are loads of other courses that you can combine it with though! If you want to do Art only, you can take the Extended Diploma which is worth the equivalent of 3 A Levels.

  • Every student we have had on the course has gained a place at their first choice university. The courses have included interior design, fine art, fashion, communication, embroidery, illustration and footwear design. We currently have students applying for courses in fashion design, art and design and film making too. This doesn’t mean that you have to go on to university, but as the course a varied in the materials, processes and techniques, and we build a portfolio in one of the units, you are well set to apply for further- or higher education as well as creative careers and apprenticeships.
