 FAQs

  • Computer Science and Information Technology (IT) are two distinct subjects, despite their many similarities. They both use computers as part of their programmes of study. Computer Science involves designing and building computers. It looks at designing computer programs, development and testing of software and software systems. IT, on the other hand, refers to maintaining and troubleshooting those computers and their networks, systems, and databases to ensure they run smoothly.

  • The AS Computer Science course covers two units which are exam based and worth 50% each. The first is “Computing principles”, which covers the structure of processors, software and software development, data types and structures; and legal, moral, cultural and ethical issues surrounding the use of technology. The second unit is on “Algorithms and problem solving” which covers computational thinking, problem solving, programming and algorithms.

  • No, in AS Computer Science there is no coursework, but you will do a lot of programming practice and maintain a portfolio of programming in Python, JavaScript, html5 & css3.

  • The AS Computer Science course requires at least an intermediate level of programming skills and a grade 5 in Computer Science is essential to cope with the level of computational thinking, programming and solving of computational mathematical problems involved in this subject.
