‘I want to do Script Writing or Media Journalism at University, so English Language has been really beneficial with helping me to understand why different groups of people use language in different ways, as well as how to write creatively.’

‘Language changes and moves in a different direction evolving all the time. Where a lot of people see deterioration, I see expressive development.’

English Language at A Level is, in many ways, very different to the subject you study at GCSE. You will take a theory-based approach to the study of sociolinguistics and language change, as well as learning about the acquisition and development of children’s language. You will also learn to analyse language in a more sophisticated manner, particularly through the study of lexis, semantics, pragmatics, grammar, and graphology.
-
English Language is a subject that requires you to think critically about the ways society works – it therefore pairs well with other subjects that demand the same ways of thinking, such as English Literature, History, Geography, Sociology, and Media Studies.
