There are many options available if you decide University is not for you. There are many different apprenticeships and training programmes in health and social care which cover a wide range of careers. Some of these include dental nursing, social work, nurse practitioner and paramedic. There is also the option of going to employment in the health and social care sector; as a health care assistant in a hospital, a domiciliary carer going into people's homes, or a care worker in a social care/residential setting.

The course requires you to do 100 hours minimum of work experience over the two years. You have the opportunity to carry out 'block placement weeks' in year 12 and year 13. You can also complete your work experience once a week over a longer period of time. You can complete 10% of your hours in a setting which works with children under 8; either in a childcare or a school setting. The rest of your hours must be in health and social care setting such as a family centre, a care home, dental surgery, SEN school, community centre and many more.

The Diploma is equivalent to two A Levels and takes up two option blocks. It allows you to choose one other subject alongside it. There is no work experience requirement. The extended diploma is equivalent to three A Levels and takes up three option blocks. It is not recommended that you take another subject alongside an Extended Diploma due to the work experience commitment.

Health and Social Care is one of the most rewarding vocational subjects because what you learn has a direct impact on improving someone's health, wellbeing and quality of life.
You will study a range of units as diverse as anatomy and physiology, sociology, psychology, mental health and child development. As well as career focused units such as working in health and social care, safe practice and work experience. It is not just about babies!
The course gives you the knowledge and skills required to be successful in a variety of different health or social care settings.
Health and Social Care gives you hands on experience of what it’s like to work with real life service users and be a professional in the sector. In this way, you will be able to apply theory to practice.
